Fokker 50

The Fokker Fokker 50, which made its first flight in 1985, represents the natural and expected evolution of the famous Fokker F27 Friendship, a pillar of regional aviation since the 1950s. The need for a successor clearly emerged in the 1980s, dictated by the need to comply with more stringent regulations on noise and emissions, as well as the market demand for greater fuel efficiency.

This ambitious project aimed to modernize the reliable F27 platform, integrating it with cutting-edge technologies to offer a completely new regional aircraft. Despite the aesthetic similarities, the Fokker 50 was, in fact, an almost entirely redesigned machine, retaining only the basic chassis of its predecessor but innovating in every other crucial aspect.

The architecture of the Fokker 50 was based on the twin-turboprop configuration, prized for its efficiency and ability to operate on shorter runways. The heart of its modernization lay in the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW125B engines, significantly more powerful, quieter and more fuel efficient than those of the F27.

The search for greater comfort and performance resulted in the adoption of Dowty six-bladed constant speed propellers, which drastically reduced noise and vibrations in the cabin, a notable improvement for passengers and crew. Aerodynamically, the design underwent refinements to optimize air flows and improve flight characteristics, making it an agile, high-performance aircraft for regional routes.

The Fokker 50 represents a culmination of Dutch aeronautical engineering in the regional turboprop sector, demonstrating remarkable innovation on a proven platform. Although it failed to save Fokker from bankruptcy in the 1990s, it remains one of its most successful and longest-lived designs.
