DC-10-40

The Douglas DC-10 family (later McDonnell Douglas DC-10) is one of the most famous and recognizable long-range wide-body airliners in the history of commercial aviation. Designed in the late 1960s to meet the demand for high-capacity aircraft more flexible than the giant Boeing 747, the prototype of this iconic trijet made its first flight on August 29, 1970, and entered commercial service in 1972.

The development of the DC-10 was marked by intense industrial competition ("the trijet war") with its rival, the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. The variant McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40 was specifically optimized to meet airline requirements for intercontinental range or hot-and-high airport performance.

Produced in 386 commercial units (plus 60 KC-10 tanker versions for the military), the DC-10 became a fundamental pillar of intercontinental and transoceanic routes during the 1970s and 1980s.

Thrust was generated by 3 × Pratt & Whitney JT9D-20, high-bypass turbofan engines offering remarkable efficiency. The aircraft provided a range of 9260 km and a twin-aisle cabin capable of carrying up to 380 passengers in high-density configurations.

The airframe made extensive use of advanced metal alloys, while the onboard systems featured a triple-redundant hydraulic system to ensure maximum flight safety.

Following its retirement from commercial passenger service, many DC-10s were successfully converted into heavy cargo planes, flying extensively for express carriers like FedEx, or adapted as impressive fire-suppression airtankers (DC-10 Air Tanker).
