Historical Context & Origins

In the aftermath of the Second World War, the British aircraft industry was faced with the arduous task of transitioning from war production to civilian production. There was an urgent need for modern airliners to re-establish severed air links, and Vickers-Armstrong, drawing on its experience with bombers such as the Wellington, quickly responded to the challenge.

The Vickers V.C.1 Viking was born as a private initiative of the company, developed from the concept of the Type 491, a light transport proposed in 1944. The objective was to create a reliable and economical twin-engine airliner for short and medium range routes, capable of exploiting existing airport infrastructure.
