Historical Context & Origins

The Tu-214 represents an increased maximum takeoff weight and long-range evolution of the twin-engine medium-range airliner family designed by the Tupolev design bureau. The first flight took place on March 21, 1996, and it subsequently entered regular commercial service.

The Tu-214 is manufactured at the KAPO plant in Kazan, unlike the Tu-204 which is assembled in Ulyanovsk. This change of manufacturing plant led to structural modifications and specific equipment layouts.

The aircraft was designed to satisfy wider range requirements and has become one of the primary passenger and special mission aircraft in the Russian state fleet.

Architecture & Technological Design

From a technical perspective, the Tu-214 shares the basic aerodynamic layout of the Tu-204 but features an increased maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 110.7 tonnes and auxiliary fuel tanks.

Propulsion is provided by two Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofan engines producing 157 kN of thrust, offering an extended range of 4,800 km with full passenger load.

It features a modern digital glass cockpit for a three-member crew (including flight engineer) and advanced integrated avionics systems of Russian manufacture.

On-Board Specifications

  • Reinforced airframe structure for higher MTOW to enable long-range operations.
  • Auxiliary fuel tanks integrated in the wing section to extend flight range.
  • Two reliable Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofans suited for extended flight times.

Operational Career & Airlines

The Tu-214 was operated by commercial carriers such as Dalavia and KrasAir but found its primary use in the special flight squadron of the Russian presidential fleet Rossiya.

Various special variants exist for military and intelligence duties, including the Tu-214ON for Open Skies missions and the Tu-214SR for strategic communications.

The standard passenger configuration comfortably accommodates up to 210 passengers in a high-density single-class layout.

Legacy & Cultural Impact

The Tu-214 is a strategic pillar of Russian state and commercial aviation. Its production in Kazan is considered of vital importance to maintain national technological autonomy in air transport.

Today, it continues to be assembled and modernized, representing one of the most important passenger and special aircraft of modern Russia.
