In the 1970s and early 1980s, demand for more capable and economical regional aircraft grew exponentially. Short Brothers, building on the success of its robust predecessor, the Short 330, recognized the need for superior evolution.

The Shorts 360, which flew for the first time in 1981, was born precisely from this market need. It was designed to offer greater passenger capacity and improved comfort, refining the design of the 330 while maintaining its renowned operational robustness.

The primary objective was to provide an aircraft that is regionally competitive, simple to maintain and capable of operating effectively on short runways. A true "workhorse" for smaller airlines, focused on maximum reliability and low operating costs.

The distinctive architecture of the Shorts 360 was based on a fuselage lengthened approximately 360 inches compared to the 330 (hence the name), maintaining the characteristic rectangular cross section. This design choice maximized interior space, both for passengers and cargo.

This high-wing monoplane offered excellent visibility to passengers and greatly facilitated loading and unloading operations on the ground. Its fixed landing gear, although not aerodynamic, ensured maximum strength, mechanical simplicity and reduced maintenance costs, essential qualities for regional aviation.

Powered by two reliable Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprops, the aircraft was renowned for its exceptional STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities. This allowed it to operate on airports with short, unprepared runways, greatly extending its operational versatility to more remote destinations.

Prominent carriers such as American Eagle, Skybus Airlines and Air UK operated it successfully. They particularly appreciated its ability to withstand frequent flight cycles and minimal maintenance needs, effectively serving both passenger routes and cargo operations.

Its extraordinary operational longevity is a clear testimony to the solidity and foresight of its project. Many examples are still active today, especially in cargo or support roles, years after production ceased in 1991.
