The BAC One-Eleven 200 emerged from a pressing need in the 1960s: to replace turboprop aircraft with faster, more comfortable short-to-medium range jets. The project was initially conceived by Vickers-Armstrong as the VC11, an ambitious aircraft destined to revolutionize regional air travel.

The merger of Vickers with other major British companies in 1960 created the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC), which inherited and developed the design. The goal was to create an economical and robust jet, capable of operating from shorter runways, offering a "jet" flying experience even on secondary routes. His first flight on August 20, 1963 put him in an advantageous position over future American competitors.
