MD-90-30

The McDonnell Douglas MD-90 represents the last advanced short-to-medium-range airliner of the rear-engine family developed by the Long Beach manufacturer before its merger with Boeing. Introduced in the early 1990s as the technological successor to the MD-80, the specific variant McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30 made its first flight on February 22, 1993, and entered commercial service in 1993.

The MD-90 was born primarily to offer a much quieter, cleaner, and fuel-efficient alternative capable of competing with the newer Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families. The aircraft introduced a fuselage stretched by 1.4 meters compared to the MD-80 and an advanced digital cockpit.

However, the program suffered from McDonnell Douglas's corporate uncertainty in the mid-1990s, resulting in a production run of only 116 units before the assembly line was permanently closed.

The great technological revolution of the McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30 lay in its powerplants. Indeed, it was equipped with two International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500 turbofan engines, a high-bypass engine family that guaranteed reduced fuel consumption and noise levels far lower than the old JT8D.

This variant provided a range of 3860 km and was capable of carrying up to 172 passengers in a pressurized single-aisle cabin with a 3+2 seating configuration, characterized by extraordinary acoustic comfort in the forward and middle sections.

The flight deck featured an electronic digital navigation system (glass cockpit) derived from the MD-88, allowing safe and efficient flight management by the two pilots.

In Asia, the MD-90 achieved significant commercial success, flying with airlines such as Japan Air System (JAS), EVA Air, and several Chinese carriers like China Northern, which appreciated its reliability and low operating costs.

Many of the units operated in China were later acquired by Delta Air Lines, which built up a massive fleet of MD-90s, keeping them in active service until their final retirement in 2020.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30 is remembered as one of the quietest and most comfortable airliners in its category. It represented the engineering pinnacle of the T-tail twin-jet dynasty started by the DC-9 in the 1960s.

Although its production was limited by corporate events, the aerodynamic and propulsive solutions of the MD-90 directly influenced the subsequent development of the Boeing 717, keeping the technological legacy of the "Mad Dog" alive into the 21st century.
