MD-88

The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 family (affectionately nicknamed Mad Dog by pilots and aviation enthusiasts) represents one of the most famous and successful single-aisle passenger airliners in the history of civil aviation. Introduced in the late 1970s as a direct and stretched evolution of the successful DC-9 series, the specific variant McDonnell Douglas MD-88 made its operational debut in 1987.

The MD-80 was born to satisfy the demand from airlines requiring greater passenger capacity and fuel efficiency on medium-haul routes. This variant introduced redesigned and lengthened wings, a fuselage stretched by several meters, and updated, quieter turbofan engines.

Produced in 1,191 units, this series became the backbone of short and medium-haul flights worldwide, famous for its unmistakable silhouette and the characteristic, powerful roar upon takeoff.

The aircraft provided a range of 3850 km and was configured to carry up to 172 passengers in a single-aisle cabin with a 3+2 seating configuration.

Flight systems were progressively upgraded, introducing electronic flight instrument systems (EFIS) and advanced autopilot systems that reduced pilot workload.
