MD-11

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 represents the final, advanced chapter in the dynasty of large three-engine commercial wide-body passenger airliners. Developed starting in the mid-1980s as the modernized successor to the DC-10, this majestic wide-body was designed to offer greater range, technological efficiency, and automation. The first flight took place on January 10, 1990, and entered service in 1990.

The MD-11 was born to compete with new twin-jets and quad-jets of its era, introducing wingtip winglets, a fuselage stretched by over 5 meters compared to the DC-10, lightweight composite materials, and new-generation engines.

Although passenger sales halted at 200 units due to fierce competition from large long-range twin-jets like the Boeing 777, the MD-11 went on to achieve extraordinary success as a heavy freighter.

The major innovation of the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 lay in its digital flight deck. It was one of the first commercial airliners to completely eliminate the flight engineer position, thanks to an advanced two-pilot glass cockpit featuring six multi-function cathode-ray tube displays that automatically monitored all aircraft systems.

Thrust was generated by 3 × General Electric CF6-80C2 or PW4460, powerful, modern high-bypass turbofan engines ensuring a very high cruising speed of 945 km/h and an exceptional range of 12400 km, making it ideal for polar and transpacific routes.

The aircraft featured double-curved winglets designed to reduce induced drag and optimize fuel burn during long hours of ocean cruising.
