In the post-war turmoil, the Italian aviation industry sought new directions, and Aermacchi, with its rich heritage, undertook the development of a multi-purpose aircraft. The need was clear: a light, robust and versatile aircraft, suitable for both training and tourism and liaison.

Engineer Ermanno Bazzocchi, the brilliant mind behind many Aermacchi successes, conceived the M.B.320 project as a pragmatic response to these needs. His intent was to create an aircraft that combined operational economy with reliable performance, a true pioneer for the restart of civil flight in Italy.

The first flight of the prototype took place in 1949, marking Aermacchi's entry into the general aviation sector with a promising design. The M.B.320 was proposed as an innovative solution, capable of seducing both private pilots and civil and, potentially, military entities for light liaison roles.
