The Lockheed L-188 Electra was conceived in the mid-1950s in response to an American Airlines specification for a fast, high-capacity, medium-range airliner capable of operating from airports with short runways. Designed by Lockheed, the prototype made its maiden flight on December 6, 1957.
The Electra represented an ambitious technological bet: a turboprop aircraft positioned to bridge the gap between older piston-engine planes and the new pure jets. Entering commercial service in 1959 with Eastern Air Lines, the aircraft initially demonstrated exceptional qualities.
However, its reputation was soon shaken by a series of tragic structural accidents caused by resonant engine vibrations (whirl mode flutter). Although Lockheed brilliantly resolved the issue through a massive wing-reinforcement program, sales suffered from public distrust, halting production at 170 aircraft.

Structurally, the Lockheed L-188 was an all-metal, low-wing monoplane. The wing architecture featured large Fowler flaps which, combined with engine thrust, offered outstanding takeoff and landing performance on short runways.
