BAe 146-100

The British Aerospace BAe 146, and in particular the -100 model, emerged as an innovative and timely response to the growing needs of regional air transport in the late 1970s. Originally conceived as the Hawker Siddeley HS.146 in the 1970s, the design was revived by British Aerospace after nationalisation, aiming to fill a market gap for an efficient and quiet regional jet.

The oil crisis and the need for aircraft with low operating costs and the ability to operate on short runways pushed the development. The first flight of the BAe 146-100 occurred on 3 September 1981, marking the beginning of an illustrious career for what would become known as the "Whisperjet".
