The ARJ21-700 (Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century) represents a fundamental pillar in China's ambitious project to establish itself in the global aeronautical industry. Born from the vision of building a regional jet entirely developed and produced in China, the program took shape at the beginning of the new millennium to meet growing domestic demand and reduce dependence on foreign manufacturers.

COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China), the company responsible, undertook a long and complex journey, culminating in the first flight on 28 November 2008. This event was not only a technical achievement, but a powerful symbol of China's engineering and manufacturing capability, marking the beginning of a new era for the country's commercial aviation.

The design of the ARJ21-700 is a fascinating fusion of tradition and innovation, designed to operate effectively in various environmental conditions, including high-altitude and hot climate airports. Its configuration features a high wing and tail-mounted engines, a design choice reminiscent of historic aircraft but integrated with modern aerodynamic criteria to improve performance.

The fuselage, in particular, derives in part from the cross section of the famous McDonnell Douglas MD-80/MD-90, models produced under license in China, which provided a solid and proven basis. Despite a particularly extensive and rigorous certification process, the ARJ21-700 finally obtained CAAC certification in 2014, entering commercial service with Chengdu Airlines in June 2016. This event marked a historic moment, with the first passenger flight connecting Chengdu to Shanghai.

Since then, the ARJ21 fleet has grown steadily, serving mainly Chinese regional airlines such as Chengdu Airlines, Genghis Khan Airlines and China Eastern Airlines. These carriers use it to connect smaller cities and remote regions, demonstrating its reliability and adaptability to domestic market needs.

The ARJ21-700 is not just an airplane, but a true manifesto of Chinese aeronautical ambitions. It provided COMAC and the entire Chinese industry with invaluable experience in the design, production and certification of a commercial aircraft, laying the foundation for much larger and more complex future programs, such as the COMAC C919 jetliner.
