The Antonov An-32, nicknamed "Climber" for its exceptional high-altitude flight capabilities, was born from a specific operational need that emerged in the mid-1970s. The main request came from India, which needed a robust tactical transport aircraft, capable of operating effectively in "hot and high" environments, such as the peaks of the Himalayas, where the performance of conventional aircraft was severely compromised.

The An-32 design was based on the reliable structure of the An-24, but was thoroughly redesigned to overcome the limitations imposed by extreme conditions.
