Tu-154

The Tupolev Tu-154 represents one of the most important and iconic mid-range trijet passenger airliners designed in the Soviet Union by the Tupolev design bureau. The first prototype completed its maiden flight on October 4, 1968, and entered regular commercial service with Aeroflot in 1972.

The Tu-154 was designed to become the backbone of Soviet civil transport and Eastern European nations, replacing older Tupolev Tu-104, Antonov An-10, and Ilyushin Il-18 airliners.

With over 1,000 units built in various versions, the aircraft served for more than three decades as the primary civil airliner in Eastern Europe, renowned for its performance in extreme weather conditions.

From a technical perspective, the Tu-154 features a rear-engine trijet configuration with a T-tail, an aerodynamic design similar to the Boeing 727.

Thrust is provided by three Soloviev D-30KU-154 engines producing 104 kN of thrust each (in newer variants), mounted at the rear of the fuselage to keep the passenger cabin quiet. The aircraft has a maximum range of 3,900 km and can accommodate up to 180 passengers in a single-aisle cabin.

One of the unique features of the Tu-154 is its extremely robust main landing gear, each with six wheels, designed specifically to allow operations on semi-prepared or icy unpaved runways in the Soviet Far North.

The Tu-154M version, introduced in the 1980s with more efficient engines and avionics updates, continued to fly regularly in scheduled service until the first decade of the 21st century.
