Tu-204
Tupolev

Historischer Kontext & Ursprünge
The Tu-204 represents the base version of the medium-range twin-engine narrow-body airliner family developed in Russia by the Tupolev design bureau starting in the late 1980s to replace the Tu-154 trijet. The first prototype completed its maiden flight on January 2, 1989, and entered regular commercial service thereafter.
Designed with state-of-the-art technologies for the Soviet aviation industry of the time, it aimed to offer low fuel consumption and high safety standards to compete on the international market with the Boeing 757 and the Airbus A320 family.
The primary production of the Tu-204 is concentrated at the Aviastar-SP plant in Ulyanovsk, where the well-known cargo and long-range variants were also built.
Architektur & Technologisches Design
From an engineering perspective, the Tu-204 features a modern low-wing aerodynamic design with winglets to reduce drag.
Propulsion for the standard airliner is provided by two Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofan engines producing 157 kN of thrust each, offering a cruising speed of about 850 km/h and a range of 4,300 km with full passenger load.
It was the first Russian commercial aircraft to adopt fully fly-by-wire electronic flight controls and a two-pilot cockpit with digital multi-function displays.
Bordspezifikationen
- ◆Two Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofans efficient complying with international noise regulations.
- ◆Advanced fly-by-wire controls for excellent precision and flight stability.
- ◆Digital glass cockpit for a two-pilot crew, reducing overall workload.
Operative Karriere & Fluggesellschaften
The Tu-204 was operated by several airlines in Russia (including Red Wings Fluggesellschaften, Vladivostok Avia) and international carriers such as Cubana de Aviación and Air Koryo, in both passenger and cargo configurations.
The aircraft proved to be an excellent medium-range transport platform, capable of operating regularly in harsh climates.
The spacious single-aisle cabin can be configured to accommodate up to 210 passengers in a high-density single-class layout.
Vermächtnis & Kultureller Einfluss
The Tu-204 represents an important transition technological milestone for the post-war Russian aviation industry. It demonstrated the capability to integrate modern avionics and international standards into solid Russian engineering.
It forms the basis of a successful family of Russian airliners that continues to fly in various civil and special configurations.
